1955 1/2 MERCURY MONTEREY 2-DOOR HARDTOP
TITLED AS A 1955 .... I do not know why..how..or when the the car got the 55 VIN plate and title. But the Mercurys VIN codes out to a 55 2-dr sedan if I am not mistaken...but after talking to a die-hard Mercury recently he said that the late '55 Mercury Monterey had a lot of the '56 vibes ( including the roofline) being added to the car late in the production year as the new model yr. cars were getting ready to emerge...And as Paul Harvey used to say --And now for the rest of the story concerning my reasoning for the 55 title on an obviously 56 model Ford--- And my theory is is that when the 80+ yr. old gentleman that I bought the car from (a yr. or so ago) switched out the engine during the 70s ...probably from a like '55 model Ford and back then oldies from the 30s & 40s were what this generation knew and back then VINs on those cars usually matched the engine #s on a vehicle. So he probably pulled the VIN plate off of that engine donor car at the salvage yard and attached it to his car in place of his original VIN plate thinking he was doing what was the correct thing to do since he had switched the engine. REMEMBER IT WAS THE 70S AND THINGS WERE NOT AS COMPLICATED OR REGULATED BACK THEN!! If I can get a hold of the gentleman I will find out the correct story & report back to this ad. Either way the 55s VIN has been cleared w/the Kansas Hwy. Patrol and is not stolen nor are there any liens on it. I HAVE NOT DRIVEN IT FAR BUT IT SEEMS TO DRIVE FINE. THE LAST OWNER HAD IT FOR WELL OVER 40 YEARS. THIS IS ONE YOU CAN ENJOY NOW AND TINKER WITH IT ALONG THE WAY, LOTS OF EYE APPEAL. THE EXTERIOR COLOR IS KIND OF A SUB LIME GREEN DOWN LOW WITH WHITE ON THE TOP HALF OF THE CAR BODY AND THE GREEN AGAIN ON THE ROOF.----THE CAR LOOKS TO HAVE BEEN AN ALL WHITE CAR ORIGINALLY. THE SUBLIME GREEN COLOR OF COURSE IS NOT ORIGINAL BUT IT SURE MAKES FOR A STRIKING COLOR COMBINATION WITH THE WHITE. THE VINYL BENCH SEAT INTERIOR IS BLACK AND WHITE AND IN REALLY NICE DRIVER /CRUISER CONDITION----IT IS STILL VERY SOFT AND PLIABLE. EVEN THE PADDED BLACK VINYL DASH PAD IS LIKE NEW . THE ENGINE LOOKS TO BE THE STANDARD STYLE V-8 WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION--ACCORDING TO THE OWNER FOR THE PAST 40+ YEARS THE ORIGINAL ENGINE WAS LOCKED UP/STUCK WHEN HE GOT IT AND HE REPLACED IT WITH ANOTHER ENGINE FROM A LIKE DONOR CAR. THE FLOOR PAN AND TRUNK PANS ARE BOTH IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND THEY BOTH STILL SHOW THE FACTORY ORIGINAL BRIGHT WHITE PAINT UNDER THE MAT/CARPET. THERE IS ONE VERY SMALL AREA OF RUST AND PIN HOLE RUST RIGHT ALONG THE FLOOR PAN SEAM UNDER THE DRIVERS GAS PEDAL AREA AND AGAIN OUR PICS WILL HIGHLIGHT THIS AREA. THE TRUNK STILL RETAINS THE ORIGINAL CARDBOARD SIDE-LINERS, TRUNK MAT AND SPARE ALONG W/BUMPER JACK. THE BUMPERS ARE STRAIGHT AND SHINY BUT THEY DO HAVE SOME SURFACE RUST/PITTING HERE AND THERE BUT LOOK GREAT FROM A FEW STEPS BACK. ALL OF THE CURVED GLASS IS GOOD WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ONE SMALL BULLSEYE CHIP IN THE WINDSHIELD ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, AS FOR THE FLAT GLASS THE TWO DOOR GLASSES ARE CRACKED AND THE RIGHT VENT WINDOW IS CRACKED. ALL OF THE EXTERIOR BRIGHTWORK IS IN PLACE AND THE STAINLESS IS IN GOOD SHAPE. THE CAR HAS A 1955 GRILLE/BUMPER BUT HAS THE 1956 STYLE BODY SIDE MOLDING?? MY GUESS IS THAT SOMEONE WANTED THEIR 1955 TO LOOK LIKE A 56....???..... AND PERSONALLY I LIKE THE 56 LOOK A LOT BETTER!!! THE LIGHTS, TAILLIGHTS, BLINKERS, HORN, DOME LIGHTS (3) AND THE GLOVE BOX LIGHT ALL WORK. THE GAUGES : OIL PRESSURE, AMP, GAS, TEMPERATURE ALL WORK. THE DASH LIGHTS INCLUDING THE GEAR SHIFT INDICATOR NEEDLE LIGHT ON COLUMN WORK ALSO. ALL OF THE WINDOWS CRANK UP AND DOWN WITH EASE....YES EVEN THE QUARTER WINDOWS CRANK UP AND DOWN WITH EASE. THE WHITE VINYL HEADLINER IS IN GREAT SHAPE WITH NO RIPS OR TEARS, AND THE SUNVISORS ARE IN GREAT CONDITION WITH ONLY THE DRIVERS VISOR BINDING LOOSE ALONG THE FRONT EDGE. THE BLACK AND WHITE VINYL BENCH SEATS ARE IN GREAT SHAPE WITH ONLY ONE SMALL 5" SEAM SEPARATION IN THE FRONT SEAT. THE BLACK VINYL DOOR PANELS (BOTH FRONT AND REAR) ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION (AND ARE FLAT WITH NO WEATHER WARPAGE)WITH ONLY THE DRIVERS ARMREST UP FRONT SHOWING WEAR. THE TIRES ARE PRETTY WEATHER CHECKED BUT HOLD AIR AND THE FULL HUBCAPS SEEM TO BE CORRECT FOR THE OLE MERCURY
